Coach Greg Swanson had a very successful career as a player AND offensive captain for one of the elite open teams of the world, your very own Atlanta Chain Lightning, on which he played for nine years. His long span with your favorite local club team includes Atlanta’s thrilling national championship season of 2009. He spent his college career as a player at the University of Georgia where he gained additional leadership experience when he again served as a captain. Coach Greg Swanson returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2009.
Miranda Knowles - Asst. Coach
Assistant Coach and Clinic Program Director, Coach Miranda Knowles. Coach Miranda has found success on all levels as a player. She played for high school standout, The Paideia School, and continued her education at the college ultimate powerhouse, Carleton College where she went on to win the most prestigious award in college ultimate, the Callahan Award. She has two national club championships with Seattle Riot as well as two world championships with the USA Junior National Team and the USA Women’s Masters Team. With over a decade of coaching experience, and a certification as a USAU Level 1 Coach, Coach Miranda Knowles has quite the coaching resume: Paideia Groove, Seattle Moho and Fryz Ultimate, ATL Outbreak, and Team Israel’s Junior Girls’ team. She also led the USA Junior Girls’ team to two national championships. As a clinic director, Coach Knowles is not only USAU certified, but has experience with Ultimate Peace, CHAMP Camp (Heart Power) and Spin Ultimate Academy.
Stu Downs - Asst. Coach
Stu has had an extensive career in Atlanta ultimate Frisbee, finding success both as a player and a coach. He began playing for Chain Lightning in 1986 and led them to Nationals 10 times from 1986 to 1997. He continued to qualify for Nationals in the Master's Division 3 more times and occupy his free time with local summer leagues, clinics and Goaltimate. As a player, he was known for his quickness, strong hands and good spirit. As a coach, he guided the University of Georgia men's team to 4th in the country in 2006 including time coaching not only current Hustlers Frank Wooten and Dylan Tunnel, but Hustle Head Coach Greg Swanson as well! Presently, he continues to coach at the junior’s level for Academe of the Oaks high school. He credits ultimate for showing him a world of amazing athletes & quality human beings, and he particularly values that these folks compete at a special level of honor not achieved in any other sport to date.
